Free Event Celebrates Olympic Games Anniversary and Promotes Olympic Values
Kids of all ages are invited to attend the 3rd annual Olympic Day Family Festival this Saturday, June 22from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This FREE event gives participants the opportunity to try various Olympic sports, meet Olympians and Paralympians and learn about the core Olympic Values. The Reno Tahoe Winter Games Coalition (RTWGC) hosts the event as part of its ongoing mission to promote the Olympic Movement throughout the region. The Junior Ski Program at Sky Tavern co-hosts the event. The University of Nevada, Reno generously provides the use of Mackay Stadium for the day. Last year’s Olympic Day Family Festival received special recognition from both the International Olympic Committee and United States Olympic Committee.
“This is one of our favorite events to stage each year,” said Paul Heglar, RTWGC Youth Sports Director. “The kids love to try all the sports and so do a lot of the adults! Giving them all a chance to be part of the Olympic Movement is what it’s all about.”
Skiing, snowboarding, turbo javelin, golf, judo, taekwondo, fencing, running races and pole vault are just some of the sports to try during the festival. Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet Olympians including UNR Hall of Famer and silver medalist swimmer Limin Liu and Reno Paralympian Ricci Kilgore.
“Get up, get out, get active is one of our messages,” said Jon Killoran, RTWGC Chief Executive Officer. “To see the kid’s faces as they try each event is awesome! We’re committed to bringing them these opportunities and the chance to learn about the greatness of sport through the Olympic Values of excellence, friendship and respect.”
