Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. remain from an initial field of cities under consideration to be the U.S. Candidate City for a 2024 Summer Olympic Games bid. United States Olympic Committee Chairman Larry Probst made the announcement in the days after the USOC’s Board of Directors made that determination.
Dallas and San Diego were thanked for their efforts to submit a bid, while New York City and Philadelphia had removed themselves from consideration within the past month. Leaders in both cities cited the high costs of hosting the Games as part of their reason to withdraw.
The USOC plans to continue working with the remaining four cities for the rest of 2014 while awaiting the outcome of an unprecedented working group study of the bid process by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Outcomes from their work are expected to be presented to the full IOC delegation during its Extraordinary Session in Monaco December 8 and 9.
If the USOC ultimately chooses a city to put forward to the international bid campaign it will most likely do so in the first quarter of 2015. The IOC will choose the Host City of the 2024 Summer Games during the second half of 2017.
Decisions made by the USOC regarding a potential U.S. Summer Games bid will also, most likely shape their thought process for a potential 2026 Winter Games bid.
